Excavators No Longer Limited to Land: Hongsan’s Modification Service Enables Water-Borne Operations
Traditionally perceived as machines restricted to land, excavators are breaking new ground—now able to operate on water, thanks to Hongsan Construction Machinery’s innovative modification services.
As global resources dwindle, the urgent need for renewable energy has intensified, with sustainable options like solar, hydro, wind, and marine energy taking center stage. According to government goals, renewable energy should account for 20% of Taiwan’s total energy mix by 2025. Taiwan Power Company’s latest report shows that in 2020, renewables made up 5.8% of the energy grid, with solar power contributing 2.5%.
A testament to these efforts is the recent completion of the world’s largest offshore solar power station—the Changhua Coastal Solar Station, Lunei East 1 and 2 (total output of 181 MW). This project, which took about a year and used 600,000 solar panels across a water area of 176 hectares, benefited from the cooling effect of the water surface, boosting energy output by 14% compared to land-based installations. In its first year, this solar station is expected to generate over 250 million kWh, enough to power 72,000 households annually. The construction overcame significant natural challenges, including the unstable open waters and strong northeast monsoon winds of the Lunei East area.
Tidal fluctuations in the area cause a water level difference of up to 4 meters, and strong seasonal winds further complicate operations, with 23 wind turbines nearby adding to the project’s difficulty. To meet these demanding conditions, machinery needed to (1) remain effective across varying water levels and muddy terrain, (2) support substantial weight, and (3) perform lifting tasks. Hongsan Construction Machinery customized amphibious excavators specifically for this project, which took nearly four months of modifications. The project successfully progressed, culminating in the establishment of a floating power station.
By modifying excavators to operate on water, Hongsan is expanding the range of tasks these machines can perform. Drawing on 40 years of experience and an ongoing commitment to industry advancements, we aim to enhance work efficiency and provide tailored solutions for clients with diverse needs, ensuring superior products and services for our customers.
