With the increasing depletion of global resources and growing energy demands, renewable energy development has become a priority. Renewable sources like solar, hydro, wind, and marine energy are essential. According to government policy, the share of renewable energy is targeted to reach 20% by 2025, with Taipower reporting a 5.8% share of renewables in 2020, including 2.5% from solar.
Recently, the world's largest offshore solar power station, the Changhua Lunwei East Solar Station (Phases 1 and 2), was completed, boasting a total output of 181 MW. Spanning 176 hectares with 600,000 solar modules on the water surface, this project took about a year to complete. The cooling effect of the water surface allows these floating solar panels to generate 14% more power than land-based installations. In its first year, the project is expected to produce over 250 million kWh of green energy, supplying electricity to approximately 72,000 households. This project also overcame major challenges posed by the area’s “open and unstable waters” and “strong northeast monsoon winds.”
Due to tidal fluctuations, water levels in the area vary by up to 4 meters, and the strong northeast monsoon winds and nearby 23 wind turbines further complicated construction. To meet project requirements, the equipment needed to be:
Unaffected by water levels and muddy terrain
Capable of supporting heavy loads
Suitable for lifting operations
